Introduction

Thirupathi is famous for the Venkateswara Swamy temple dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, located about 10 km north west of Thirupathi in the hallowed Thirumala hills at an elevation of 853 m. One of the richest and most important pilgrimage centers in India, the temple draws millions of pilgrims and is one of the busiest pilgrimage centres in the world. Thirupathi town itself has several temples and is famous for its red wooden toys, copper and brass idols. Also, the town is a major economical and educational hub in the southern region of the state.

This temple has Perumal or Vishnu as the presiding deity (Lord of the Seven Hills), and is more commonly referred to as the Thirupathi Balaji Temple which has served as its most popular attraction. The lush green beauty surrounding the temple, situated atop the Thirumala Hill, at an elevation of 750m, only serves to add to its reverence. However, apart from the sacred shrine, there are a number of other tourist attractions in Thirupathi that engage visitors interest.

The temple town of Thirupathi is located in the southeastern part of Andhra Pradesh, in Chittoor district. It lies about 152 km northwest of Chennai in the Palkonda Hills. This pilgrimage centre is located at the foothills of the Eastern Ghats at a distance of 550 kms south of Hyderabad, the capital of the state.
