Alappuzha, Known as the Venice  of the East touched by the silvery waves of the Arabian Sea  welcomes every body to the back waters of kerala.  The interlocked  cannels, shores, backwaters and lagoons with picturesque of  never-ending panorama of lush green paddy fields and glimpses from the day to day life in the country side had blessed Alappuzha to became one of best backwater tourist destination in the world. In the past Alappuzha was one of the busiest centres of trade with one of the best known ports along the Malabar coast. Alappuzha is a backwater hub of kerala and well known for its coir carpet manufacturing and prawn farming. Kuttanadu, densely covered with waterways is also known as  “rice bowl” or "Keralathinte Nellara"is also in Alappuzha district.

The large networks of canals provide Alleppey its lifeline.  Snake boat race are the most significant traditional event in Alappuzha which held between August and October, plays an important role in the community life of the people of the district.

The second Saturday of August every year brings magnificent crowd from all over the world to watch Nehru Trophy Boat Race. The most colourful water sport in Kerala is conducted at Punnamada Lake . The main attraction of Nehru Trophy Boat Race is the sportive sprits among the participants of the race.
